RACING BACKGROUND

Dave Labs' racing background covers several areas of Motorsports.  Racing is something that has been in the family for years.  In the 60's Dave's Dad raced at several Drag Strips in Wisconsin and New Jersey.  In the 70's, Dave's Mom and Dad worked with Michigan SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) Road Race ace Dave Burrows.  They won a lot of races and set track records at Road America, Gratten, Michigan, and Indianapolis Raceway Park.  In 1975, they finised 4th in the nation at the SCCA National Runoffs at Road Atlanta. An interesting side note, during their Sports Car Racing days, Dave's Mom and Dad had some occational encounters with the great Actor / Racer Paul Newman. Newman was racing at some of the same events they were competing at.  The Burrows / Labs team raced a few more seasons but that eventually came to an end when Burrows' business required more of his attention.

In the early 80's, Dave's Dad got back into Drag Racing competing locally in a 1959 Corvette.  Dave would always go with his Mom and Dad to the Drag Races. He had varoius duties he had to perform on the car.  In the mid-80's, Dave's Dad hung up his helmet and had a variety of other drivers race the car.  Of all the people that drove the Corvette, Sportsman Drag Racing standout Jon Steldt clearly did the best in it.  Steldt won a few races and he made the cars' quickest pass; 10.01 seconds.

In 1987, Dave began his driving career.  He raced in the Racine (WISCONSIN) Area Soap Box Derby.  He won the Rookie of the Year title.  The car that Dave drove is on display for the world to see at "Big Daddy" Don Garlits' Museum of Drag Racing in Ocala, Florida.  The car has been in the Museum since 1988.

In 1989, Dave attempted Kart Racing.  He suffered a  very nasty, high speed roll-over crash at a track in Michigan.  He came away from the crash with some knee and leg injuries.  After he recovered from the crash, Dave decided he had had enough of Kart Racing.

In 1993, Dave got his first taste of Professional Racing when he became a crew member for famed American Speed Association (ASA) team "Baker Motorsports". While with the Baker team, he got to work with drivers: Steve Holzhausen, Tony Raines, and Seve Carlson.

In 1995, Dave got to visit the Winner's Circle for the first time in big time racing. The team (with Raines driving) won the ASA Mello Yello 300 on the road corse at Heartland Park Topeka beating NASCAR Champion Terry Labonte.

The year 1996 was by far one of Dave's most memorable as Tony Raines and the Baker Motorsports team won the ASA / AC Delco Challenge Series National Championship title.  The following year, Tony Raines went to NASCAR and Steve Carlson took over the driver's seat at Baker Motorsports.  1997 also marked the final year that Dave worked as an over-the-wall crew person.

One bright spot during 1997 season was that Dave got a chance to crew for Stock Car Racing Legend Butch Miller.  Butch had a one race deal to drive for car owner Jim Daly and a "Yellow Pages Crew" was assembled for that event. Having only been a tire carrier and doing the catch can, Dave got the call to be a tire changer. Miller started last (in a field of 38) but with some good pit work was able to finish 8th.  After the race Dave said he was just happy none of the wheels fell off. During his Stock Car career Dave also worked with drivers Randy Porter, Jim Bown, Mark Dismore, and Jimmie Johnson.

Dave decided in 1997 that he was ready to get back behind the wheel of a Race Car.  After the Stock Car life, it was now time to go back to Drag Racing.  Dave went to Roy Hill's Drag Racing School and earned his NHRA Competition License.  Along with Roy, Dave also worked with former IHRA Pro Stock Driver Hank Hill and current NHRA Pro Stock Crew Chief Tommy Utt.

In 1998, Dave began racing the 1959 Corvette that his Dad used to race.  In the Fall of '98, Dave got his first taste of excitement behind the wheel.  On a test run at Great Lakes Dragaway (Union Grove, WI), the car's engine exploded violently blowing out the entire left side of the engine block along with most of the connecting rods.  One of the exploded pieces hit a brake line and ripped it off. Keep in mind that the engine exploded at about the 800 ft. mark and the car costed through the finish line at 120 MPH.  Dave had no brakes and no parachute and even though the car jumped the sand trap, he amazingly got it stopped without hitting a thing.  The Corvette suffered some minor chassis damage but was out of commison.  The talk about a new car began.

In mid 1999, Dave contracted Mike Spitzer of Spitzer Race Cars to build an Altered. With his ultimate goal of one day driving a Funny Car, Dave felt an Altered was the next logical step.  In 2000, "The Secret Agent" 1932 Bantam Altered was "born".

One of the most asked questions is about the car's name.  The name came from the great Johnny Rivers song "Secret Agent Man".  Having a creative mind, Dave was working on the Altered and heard the song on the radio.  The car's color scheme appeared in his head and that was that.  " The Secret Agent" is quite popular with the fans and Dave says it is the nicest car he has ever driven.

Aside from the Altered, he also has some Nitro crew experience and from 2002 to 2004 was part owner of a Top Fuel Dragster.
